Use the LFNBK utility
CAUTION: Only experienced computer users should use this utility.
1) Locate the 'LFNBK' folder on the installation CD-ROM or diskette, and copy it to the desktop:
a) Click the 'Start' button to display the 'Start' menu.
b) Select 'Find' and select 'Files or Folders...' from the 'Find' submenu. (The 'Find: All Files' dialog box appears.)
c) Type LFNBK in the 'Named' box.
d) Select the drive containing the Windows 95 installation CD-ROM or diskette from the 'Look in' drop-down list box.
e) Right-drag the 'LFNBK' folder from the find results window onto the Windows desktop. (A pop-up menu appears.)
f) Select 'Copy Here' from the pop-up menu to copy the 'LFNBK' folder onto the desktop.
2) Close all other running programs.
3) Open an MS-DOS Prompt:
a) Click the 'Start' button to display the 'Start' menu.
b) Select 'Programs' and select 'MS-DOS Prompt'.
4) Do one of the following at the MS-DOS prompt:
a) To report actions on screen and backup and remove long filenames on the hard disk, type the following, and press ENTER:
LFNBK /v
b) To restore long filenames which were previously backed up, type the following, and press ENTER:
LFNBK /r
c) To locate long filenames but not convert them to 8.3 format, type the following, and press ENTER:
LFNBK /p
NOTE: This option lists existing long filenames along with their corresponding creation, access, and modification dates.
5) Restart the computer.
NOTE: When Windows 95 is restarted, the default 'Start' menu appears. The original 'Start' menu will return when restoring the long filenames.
6) Run the disk utility as described in the utility instructions.
7) To restore the long filenames, run the LFNBK utility again by typing the following at the MS-DOS prompt, and pressing ENTER:
LFNBK /r
